Moisture from Tropical Cyclone Josh and energy moving south from Canada will combine to form a significant storm system in the southeast on Thursday. This storm will move northward on Friday spreading precipitation into the region Friday Night and Saturday Morning. A secondary low is now expected to form Friday Night off the coast of New Jersey and head northward on Saturday over Cape Cod. This low will enhance precipitation across much of southern New England and help reinforce colder air west of the Harford-Manchester axis. This will allow precipitation to fall as snow in NW MA and SW NH Friday Night into Saturday Morning. Warmer air out ahead of the primary low will win the battle on Saturday and chance all precip to rain in southern New England through the afternoon. Rain will fall heavy at times and could result in some poor-drainage street flooding. Current QPF outlook is for 1 to 2 inches across the region with locally higher amounts where the axis of precipitation from the secondary low falls. The secondary low continues to be progged stronger than ever before and this may play a huge part in precip accumulation and type. Currently, it appears rain could change back over to snow Saturday Night before tapering off Sunday Morning. A wet coating of snow could accumulate Friday Night in NW MA and SW NH with an inch possible in the higher elevations and more to the north. An additional coating of snow could then fall Saturday Night behind the storm.
Much colder air will move in Sunday with lows dipping into the low 20s and highs on Monday barely reaching 40. This cold snap is expected to last through mid-week at least.
Stay tuned for updates on the upcoming storm.
Post Script:
This storm will be a major test for the models and what biases they will have this season, and also could be a good indicator of what the winter ahead may hold.
