Sunny skies will be the rule for today helping temperatures to around 40 by the afternoon (8 to 10 degrees above the average). Tonight, temperatures will fall to around 20 under clear skies. Tomorrow will continue with partly to mostly sunny skies. Temperatures will be slightly cooler; in the mid to upper 30s (4 to 8 degrees above average). Tomorrow night, temperatures will take a tumble into the mid to upper teens (still, by the way, above the average low of 11). Clouds will move into the area on Saturday as a disturbance enters the region from the west. There is a slight chance of a shower or snow shower, however have kept that out of the forecast for now. Sunny skies will return on Sunday boosting temperatures to near 40 again.

Monday, New Year's Day, will bring with it some new weather excitement. A storm system (currently dumping rains in the Pacific northwest) will move into the mid west out ahead of a ridge in the east on Sunday and then spread precipitation into the region by noon Monday. While temperatures at the surface will be below freezing at least 22 hours out of the day on Monday, above freezing upper air temperatures will mean a chance of icy weather through Monday evening. Monday Night, freezing rain and rain will change to a mix of sleet and snow, with little in the way of accumulation. Tuesday, cooler temperatures will move into the upper levels, allowing for a mix of freezing rain and snow to continue into the evening before tapering off Tuesday Night. Some light snow accumulation is not out of the question (maybe an inch or two of slushy wet snow), but the main concern at this point in time is the possibility of significant icing through Tuesday. This storm is still 4 to 6 days out, so confidence remains low especially with precipitation type. One thing we may have to watch for is the chance of our first delay/cancellation on Tuesday?

In the long term, warmth will continue through at least the first 10 days of January with a positive NAO, and a positive AO through the period. However, there is some indication from the GFS that a gradual pattern change may occur around the 15th.
